CHANGES TO THE UK IMMIGRATION RULES FOR UKRAINIANS

30/05/2022
We have compiled a list of all the main changes to the UK immigration rules applicable to Ukrainian nationals and their family members.

If your relative permanently resides in the UK, you can apply for a Ukraine Family Scheme visa that will be valid for 3 years. This visa will grant you the right to work and study in the UK.

Eligibility

  • Your relative in the UK is one of the following: spouse (at least since 01/01/2022) / unmarried partner (at least for 2 years), child, parent, grandparents (including your spouse’s/partner’s), grandson (including your spouse’s/partner’s), sibling, uncle/aunt, cousin, nephews, in-laws. Under exceptional circumstances, other kinship may be considered.

  • Your relative is in the UK as one of the following: British citizen, holder of an ILR, permanent residence permit or other settled status, citizen of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland with pre-settled status, a refugee or a humanitarian protection in the UK beneficiar.

  • You are Ukrainian, or the family member of a Ukrainian national who is applying to the scheme to join a UK-based immediate family member (in this case, you can apply with them).

  • You have been living in Ukraine on / immediately before 1 January 2022.

How to apply?

  • Online. You can find all the details and link to the application here. If you don’t have a Ukrainian international passport or an expired one with an extension stamp, you’ll need to book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) in any country — all the services of the centre will be free of charge for you. You can also apply while in the UK.

Required documents

It is not mandatory to provide any documents, but it may help support your application if you are able to. Plus, you will have to explain why you are unable to provide certain documents when you apply. So if possible, you should provide any documents that show:

  • Your relationship to your UK-based family member;
  • Proof you were residing in Ukraine on / immediately before 1 January 2022;
  • Any other evidence requested as part of the application.

If you hold any valid UK visa or held one that expired on / after 1 January 2022, you can apply to stay in the UK for 3 years under the Ukraine Extension Scheme with the right to study, work and access public funds.

Eligibility

  • You are Ukrainian or the immediate family member of a Ukrainian national who is applying to the scheme;
  • You have had permission to be in the UK (for example a visa) on 18 March 2022 or you previously had permission to stay in the UK but it expired on / after 1 January 2022.

How to apply?

You must apply online here. You will then book and attend an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point. When you apply you’ll need to provide:

  • Valid passport or other travel ID;
  • Proof that you have or have had permission to stay in the UK;
  • If you’re the non-Ukrainian family member of a Ukrainian national, you’ll also need to provide evidence of your relationship to them.

Note that this route does not currently lead to settlement — this means that you may not be able to count any time you spend in the UK with this visa as part of an application for ILR in the UK in the future.

Oxford University will award fully funded scholarships to 20 Ukrainian refugees.

Conditions

  • The scholarship will be allocated for the academic year 2022-23 for Master’s programs;
  • The grant is intended for highly qualified graduates of Ukrainian universities who ordinarily reside in Ukraine and who have been displaced within or outside Ukraine;
  • The scholarship will cover the course fees in full, provide free accommodation, meals and a £7,500 grant.

How to apply?

The deadline for applications is 20 June 2022. You can read all the conditions and apply on the Oxford’s official website.

Other visa benefits for Ukrainians:

  • Applicants from Ukraine can take a TB test in any clinic, not necessarily in one approved by the Home Office.

  • Ukrainian citizens who temporarily work on trucks or as butchers will be allowed to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa.

  • Citizens of Ukraine with a valid Visitor visa can switch into a point-based immigration system without having to leave the UK. Ukrainian nationals on an existing points-based immigration system route can extend the duration of their stay in the UK.

  • Ukrainian nationals with a valid Seasonal Worker visa will have their stay in the country extended until December 31, 2022.
